Can i bring this on the plane?

Im going to bring a normal sized duffle bag as my carry on, for my United flight tomorrow, but it also says i can bring a personal item, like a backpack! but it says a "small" back pack! i just have a normal school sized swiss gear back back, would that be considered a personal item? or a carry on?
